Oenologists

A team of experienced hardworking experts

The Terriccio wine staff consists of Carlo Ferrini, consultant oenologist for red wine production and agronomist, Emanuele Vergari, farm manager, and Nicola Vaglini, cellar master and oenologist.

Carlo Ferrini is the wine consultant responsible for the viticulture at some of Tuscany's most distinguished and prominent wine estates.

He graduated with degrees in agronomy and enology from the agricultural faculty of Florence University in 1978 and started work with the Consorzio del Chianti Classico. He gained great technical experience from leading the Consorzio's technical department and practical experience working with its member companies.

Carlo Ferrini was always keen on the potential of Sangiovese and had this passion further invigorated when he lead the "Chianti Classico 2000" research project where the major exploration was in Sangiovese clones. He became an expert in the field of Sangiovese, a winemaker by 1992 and began his own business the same year.

Today he is renowned worldwide for his extraordinary winemaking abilities and expertise, and both he and the wines he has worked on are celebrated with several awards and prices. In 2003 he was named 'Winemaker of the Year' by AIS (Associazione Italiana Sommerlier) and most recently elected 'Winemaker of the year 2007' by Wine Enthusiast.

Nicola Vaglini, born in 1974 in Magliano Tuscany, is the cellar master and oenologist of Castello del Terriccio. He graduated from University of Pisa in science and agronomy in 2002 as well as in vitculture and oenlogy in 2007. Although still very young, he has matured a rich experience while working for renommated wineries as "La Brancaia", "Donna Fugata", "Poliziano" and "Poggio Verrano". He joined our team in summer 2009 and managed to adapt quickly to the particular conditions of Castello del Terriccio. His passions, apart from spending time with his wife and son, who are living in one of the old farmhouses on the estate, are wine and gastronomy, classic music, mountain biking and skying.

Emanuele Vergari is Farm Manager at Castello del Terriccio and heavily engaged in the winemaking and its management.

Emanuele studied in the province of Morellino di Scansano - an appellation in the southern part of Tuscany, at the Agronomy high school. The region's natural charm and its attractiveness as a core for top-wine making in Italy made it an ideal appellation for developing winemaking skills. After his graduation Emanuele therefore took on several positions in the appellation as a Vineyard manager.

Emanuele commenced his career with Terriccio in 1996. He carefully studied all the branches of the agriculture business and the processes and work performed in the cellar. He worked through the processes step-by-step and developed his engagement in all the agricultural activities. When agronomist Vittorio Ballini past away in 2004 Emanuele took over the responsibilities. He now successfully manages the farm and partakes in the winemaking and cellar work.
